Alan Bean ALSEP Press Conference

10  x  8  B/W Glossy NASA Photograph

NASA No.  108-KSC-69P-802

2 October 1969

Apollo 12 Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean demonstrates the Lunar Surface Scientific Experiments he and Commander Conrad will deploy during their lunar landing mission. Alan ran through all the experiments within the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) at a press conference he conducted on the evening of 2 October 1969 at  the Cape.

This very fine vintage NASA glossy photograph is in near mint condition.

NASA No.  108-KSC-69P-797

2 October 1969

Alan opens the press conference with a run through of the first of the two sub-packages that make up the ALSEP. This sub-package contains the astronauts hand tools that they used for geological sampling, one of the experiment subsystems and the primary portion of the Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG).

The Magnetometer Experiment is seen in the right foreground with the Central Stations just behind it.

This sub-package contains the astronauts hand tools that they used for geological sampling, one of the experiment subsystems and the primary portion of the Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG).

Looks like Alan is holding a section Lunar Sample Scoop in his left hand and is pulling out the remainder of the tool from the sub-package with his right.

The Magnetometer Experiment is seen in the foreground and the Central Stations antenna is seen on the far right.

Alan Bean ALSEP Press Conference  #3

10  x  8  B/W Glossy NASA Photograph

NASA No.  108-KSC-69P-803

2 October 1969

Alan is seen holding up his spacesuit glove that has his EVA Check-List attached. This is a common place where the astronauts have a EVA task check list attached for easy reference during their time on the Moon. I am sure this part of the check list covers the set up of the ALSEP experiments.

Looks like Alan has broken down or unpacked the first sub-package as you can see the components to his left. The Lunar Tool Carrier is just to his left with the RTG behind it. On the extreme right we see the gnomon that is used for photo size and colour comparisons.

NASA No.  108-KSC-69P-801

2 October 1969

Alan is still holding his spacesuit glove with his EVA check-list attached in his right hand and in his left is a gnomon that he has taken from the lunar tool carrier, just behind and to his left. A gnomon is used during lunar EVA when taking photographs as it has a ruler and colour chart for size and colour comparisons of the objects being photographed.

You can see the components of the first ALSEP sub-package that Alan has unpacked and laid out behind him.

Alan has turned his attention to the components of the second sub-package of the ALSEP as he is leaning over touching the Central Stations antenna with the Magnetometer Experiment in the foreground.

Alan is now standing next to the components of the second sub-package of the ALSEP. In the foreground is the Magnetometer Experiment and the Central Station is seen behind it. Just under Alan's hand is the Lunar Ionosphere Detector with the Passive Seismic Experiment behind it.

Last but not least Alan is seen holding up a mock-up of the Surveyor Camera that he and Conrad will bring back to Earth after removing it from the unmanned spacecraft that landed near the Apollo 12 landing site in the Ocean of Storms.

Not only was the press conference about the ALSEP, Alan gave a briefing on the astronauts Spacesuit and other planned EVA tasks like returning the Surveyor Camera to Earth for analysis.
