Mercury Atlas-8 June 27, 1962 - D. Brainerd Holmes, NASA's Director of Manned Space Flight, announced on this day that the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission would be for six orbits around the Earth and Walter Schirra would be the prime pilot with Gordon Cooper as backup pilot. When Wally finally got in the cockpit of Sigma 7 for the final countdown he was quoted as saying that it was the first time he got a chance to relax since last December. |
