| The first U.S. manned
orbital mission started on 20 February 1962 with the launching of
Mercury Atlas 109D booster with John Glenn inside the Friendship 7
spacecraft as its payload.
The Mercury Space Vehicle lifted off from Launch Complex 14 at the Cape at 9:47 a.m. on 20 February 1962 after many days of scrubbed launches and a few hours of delays on the day of lift off. John Glenn finally puts America in orbit however, a false landing bag deploy light led to re-entry being started with retro-pack left strapped in place onto the heat shield. As it turned out the indicator light was faulty and a spectacular re-entry ensued, with glowing chunks of the retro-pack whizzing by the window. After four hours and 43 minutes the spacecraft re-entered the atmosphere and landed at 2:43 p.m. EST in the planned recovery area NE of the Island of Puerto Rico. All flight objectives were achieved and Glenn was reported to be in excellent condition. Because of the failure of one of the automatic guidance systems, Glenn had to take over control of the spacecraft using the manual system for part of the mission. With this flight, the basic objectives of Project Mercury had been now achieved. |
