Alan Shepard holds the distinction of being the first American to journey into space. On May 5, 1961, in the Freedom 7 spacecraft, he was launched by a Redstone vehicle on a ballistic trajectory suborbital flight--a flight which carried him to an altitude of 116 statute miles and to a landing point 302 statute miles down the Atlantic Missile Range. Apollo 14 - Commander Rear Admiral Shepard has logged a total of 216 hours and 57 minutes in space, of which 9 hours and 17 minutes were spent in lunar surface EVA's. The evaluation was carried out under zero-gravity conditions aboard an Air Force KC-135 jet aircraft from Killington Air Force Base. Here, strips of Astro-Velcro pile tape have been attached to the floor. Corresponding patches of Astro-Velcro hook tape are attached to the astronaut's boots. When the hook and pile touch, they mesh, providing a sound footing for weightless astronauts. Shepard Jr., prime crew commander of the Apollo 14 mission, has a gnomon in his left hand while pulling the 'Met' during a simulation of a traverse on the lunar surface. Members of the Apollo 14 prime and backup crews were in Hawaii to train for the extravehicular activity of their upcoming mission. Features of the terrain at Kapoho and other Hawaiian sites are very similar to those found on the lunar surface. A Modular Equipment Transporter (MET), nicknamed the "Richshaw" because of its appearance and method of propulsion. Al is followed by Ed Mitchell with a Hasselblad Lunar Surface Camera.
